by Richard Wagner
Der fliegende Holländer, Wagner’s fourth opera and a quintessential romantic work, marked a turning point in the composer’s artistic evolution, foreshadowing his use of the famous Wagnerian leitmotifs.
Inspired by a fierce storm he endured during a journey from Riga to London, and set against the backdrop of the Norwegian coast, Wagner tells the ancient legend of the Flying Dutchman: a captain condemned to sail the seas eternally without rest, except once every seven years, when he is allowed to come ashore with the hope that a woman’s love might redeem him and break the curse. That woman is Senta, the daughter of the Norwegian sailor Daland, who, through her love and final act of sacrifice, frees the cursed mariner.
A story of redemption through love—one of the themes that obsessed Wagner throughout his life. In this powerful romantic opera, Wagner immerses us in the myth of the Flying Dutchman and, with vibrant and intense music, weaves a tale where fate, unconditional love, and the force of the sea take center stage.
