de Giuseppe Verdi
Nabucco was Giuseppe Verdi’s third opera and his first big success, making him the foremost Italian opera composer.
Set in Babylon, Nabucco is an epic opera that recounts the rivalry between the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar, who is oppressing the Jewish people, and his adoptive daughter, Abigaille. Its premiere was a resounding success not only for the opera’s music but also because the audience, immersed in the wave of nationalism that eventually led to the unification of Italy in a single state, saw themselves reflected in the plot: an episode in the Hebrew exile in Babylon after the conquest of Jerusalem by king Nebuchadnezzar II. The celebrated choir Va, pensiero, in which the Hebrews express their longing for their lost homeland, has become a hymn to freedom.
This opera deals with such themes as power, redemption and liberty, featuring powerfully depicted characters and emotions that are masterfully reflected by a majestically expressive music.
