by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Considered one of the great masterpieces of opera, Le nozze di Figaro marks the beginning of the collaboration between Mozart and Da Ponte, one of the most fruitful partnerships in the history of opera.
Set near Seville during the second half of the 18th century, the opera tells the story of Count Almaviva, an enlightened aristocrat who has abolished the feudal right of prima nocta on his estates in Andalusia. The first girl due to marry is Susanna, the Countess’s young and beautiful maid, who is engaged to Figaro, the Count’s servant. The arrogant Count seeks Susanna’s favors but ends up falling victim to a conspiracy led by his own wife, with the help of the household staff, ultimately bringing him to public shame.
Le nozze di Figaro is an opera with an extraordinary libretto in which philosophy blends with comedy, and Mozart’s incredible, refined music brilliantly conveys the psychological depth of each character.
