The story takes place in Andalusia, where the love of a sensual and free-spirited gypsy girl, Carmen, and a strict closed-minded soldier, Don José, ends in tragedy when he kills her because he cannot accept that she, who has always been guided by her instincts, has left him for another man. Carmen presents a true portrait of life in Andalusia around 1830, with a mixture of soldiers, smugglers, bullfighters and gypsy women, in which the brilliance of the music evokes a seductive setting that entrances the audience all the way to the tragic climax with the unquestionably heroic death of the bewitching gypsy Carmen.
