Gaetano Donizetti
L’elisir d’amore, one of the great operas of the Italian bel canto tradition, is a story of pure, transparent and sincere love through which Gaetano Donizetti created a true masterpiece of comic opera.
The protagonist is Nemorino, a naïve young man in love with Adina, a wealthy and intelligent woman who seems far beyond his reach, and who places his hopes in a supposed love elixir to win her heart. The mysterious remedy, sold by the smooth-talking Dulcamara, triggers misunderstandings and comic situations that ultimately reveal that the true driving force of the story is the sincerity of human feelings. When Nemorino unexpectedly inherits a fortune, Adina realizes that she too loves him, while Dulcamara attributes the happy ending to the miraculous powers of his potion.
L’elisir d’amore combines humour, sensitivity and irresistible melodies such as the celebrated aria “Una furtiva lagrima”, one of the best-known pages in all of Italian opera. A comedy about love, innocence and deception that has become one of the most beloved works in the operatic repertoire.
