Pietro Mascagni ǀ Ruggero Leoncavallo
Cavalleria rusticana and Pagliacci, two cornerstones of Italian verismo, mark a turning point in opera history through their direct and unflinching portrayal of everyday life, far removed from romantic idealisation.
In Cavalleria rusticana, set in rural Sicily on Easter Day, a drama of jealousy, honour and revenge unfolds: Turiddu, returning from military service, resumes his relationship with Lola, now married to Alfio. When Santuzza, Turiddu’s fiancée, discovers the affair, she reveals it to Alfio, setting in motion a fatal chain of events. In Pagliacci, set in a Calabrian village during the Feast of the Assumption, a travelling theatre company conceals similar tensions behind the curtain: Canio discovers his wife Nedda’s betrayal and, unable to separate life from stage, turns a theatrical performance into real tragedy before the audience.
Featuring two of the most iconic pieces in the operatic repertoire — the Intermezzo from Cavalleria rusticana and the aria “Vesti la giubba” from Pagliacci — these works stand out for their extraordinary expressive intensity and dramatic force. Two passionate human dramas, portrayed with stark realism, in which ordinary characters are driven to the extreme by powerful emotions.
