de Giacomo Puccini
One of the most representative works of Italian verismo, Tosca marked Puccini’s undisputed recognition as the greatest opera composer of his times and as Verdi’s natural heir to the leadership of the Italian school.
Tosca is an opera of uncontrollable passions, jealousy, vengeance, hate and suicidal love set in the historical context of the Europe of the year 1800, during the Napoleonic invasion of Italy. The plot revolves around the heroine, the singer Floria Tosca, who is forced to deal with the corrupt and lecherous Baron Scarpia, chief of the Roman police, to save her loved one, the painter with revolutionary ideas Mario Cavaradossi. An opera denouncing the political conspiracy and the control that the authorities seek to exercise on art.
This opera offers a mixture of politics and love, with the impressive aria Vissi d’arte, in which Tosca reflects on her virtue in the midst of the tragic events… All told, an authentic melodrama of political rivalries and passions with a very dramatic ending.
