by Giuseppe Verdi
Together with Rigoletto and Il trovatore, La traviata forms Verdi’s so-called ‘popular trilogy’ and is one of the most frequently performed operas worldwide, despite its initial failure.
The story of La traviata revolves around Violetta Valéry, a Parisian courtesan who falls in love with the young Alfredo Germont. Despite their sincere love, their relationship is undermined by social conventions and family pressure. A narrow-minded and deeply hypocritical bourgeois morality drives her away from happiness and forces her to make a great sacrifice out of fear of public judgment. The opera offers a portrait of a rotten, corrupt society concealed beneath a glittering surface—a truth that the audience at the premiere rejected, feeling too harshly portrayed.
A romantic opera, yet also a clear precursor to verismo, which tells a moving story of a courtesan’s redemption through love, with highly expressive music that captures the characters’ emotions and conveys their inner turmoil.
