Giuseppe Verdi
Aida is a masterpiece of artistic maturity by Giuseppe Verdi, combining spectacle and emotion within the evocative setting of Pharaonic Egypt.
Premiered in 1871 in Cairo, the plot revolves around a love triangle: the powerful Amneris, daughter of the Pharaoh, and Aida, an Ethiopian slave who is in fact the daughter of the enemy king Amonasro, compete for the love of Radamès, an Egyptian general in love with Aida. Amid the conflict between Egypt and Ethiopia, Aida is torn between loyalty to her people and her feelings, while Radamès is caught between patriotic duty and love. His inner struggle leads him to an involuntary betrayal that condemns him to death, and Aida chooses to share his fate in a tragic and moving final scene.
Beyond its dramatic intensity, Verdi composed a score of extraordinary evocative power and rich contrasts, featuring moments of lyrical intimacy such as “Celeste Aida”, nocturnal atmospheres along the Nile, and grand spectacular scenes like the famous Triumphal March. An explosion of sound and colour filled with the emotion of Romantic opera, making Aida one of the undisputed landmarks of the operatic repertoire.
